Musings from the ‘Gaza Envelope’

Musings from the ‘Gaza Envelope’

Jul 30th, 2008

“And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as a rose….” (Isaiah 35:1)

Moshav Sde Nitzan is located in what is called ‘The Gaza Envelope’. It is within about 5 miles of the Gaza Strip, and as such is within the range of Kassam rockets fired from the strip. I have begun a ‘blog’ to tell you how things look from here, and to allow me to make other random comments about life in Israel.

We have recently updated our site a bit and I am starting a new blog. The original blog is still available at www.israelrose.com/9km.html . I have not copied all of the history to this page. I hope to update the blog regularly. Please send your comments to: blog@israelrose.com. Here are some other links which might interest you.

If you understand Hebrew you can hear live radio and some recorded TV from Israel Broadcasting at: reshet bet
There are links on that site to TV news broadcasts, recorded news broadcasts in English, and lots more stuff.
You can ‘read all about it’ at these sites, and lots more. some in English, some in Hebrew.

Last night our prime minister, Ehud Olmert announced that he would not be a candidate in the upcoming primaries in the Kadima party. His decision is applauded by many, for different reasons. Some people believe he is guilty as charged, though he has not been charged with anything yet. Some people say that he may be guilty, he may be innocent but the cloud of suspicion surrounding him prevents him from fulfilling his duties effectively.
We are now witness to a ‘battle’ between freedom of the press, and a citizen’s legitimate right to the basic assumption that he is innocent until proven guilty. He has been ‘charged’, mainly in and by the press, and through leaks from the various police investigations being carried on.
What if – just imagine – that he is innocent. He will have been ‘run out of town’ by vigilantes. Of course, he may be guilty and then he has saved us a long and embarrasing period of a crippled government that can not effectively govern.
The pundits in Israel often say that it is hard to make predictions in Israel, especially if you are trying to predict the future.
Even Olmert’s exit from the political stage won’t be immediate. The primaries are scheduled for mid September. After that there is a long period when the winner of the primaries – the new head of the Kadima party – can try to form a new government. Olmert has the choice of resigning the day after the primary election or only when – and if – a new government is formed.
Of one thing we can be certain. The following weeks won’t be boring.

Here is a bit of background posted a few months ago.
We have been inundated lately with questions regarding our geographic position and ‘the situation’ in the “Gaza Envelope” and what we think will happen. So we are replying to you (and everyone else) to try to answer some of the questions. We have attached a map of the general Gaza Strip environs to this mail.
english mapclick to enlarge then double click for sizing icon then enlarge to full size

As you can see, if you zoom in on the map and move around a bit, we are across from the Southern end of the Gaza Strip. We can be found at C-25 on the map. We are a few kilometers nearly due East of the Rafiach Border crossing, and Kibbutz Kerem Shalom. Kerem Shalom was where Gilad Shalit was kidnapped some 18 months ago. We are roughly 25 miles south of Sderot. Sderot is very close to the NE corner of the Gaza strip. It is marked – we hope clearly. Sderot and the settlements across from the Northern end of the strip have borne the brunt of the Kassam Rocket attacks over the past weeks and months – even years. However there are attacks all along the area bordering the Gaza Strip. That area is now called ‘the Gaza Envelope’ and the government has been making some effort to ease some of the pressure on the people and businesses here. I won’t get into a discussion of the government’s actions. All in all, the situation in the area bordering the Gaza strip – from the Northern end to the Southern border with Egypt and Israel – is quite unbearable. No aspect of life is untouched, however all aspects of life continue with some semblance of normalcy. The schools have ‘secure areas’, concrete rooms, or concrete roofing over classrooms etc, some homes do too. In order to carry out our daily rounds, and live our normal lives, we must and do, drive down the roads in the area even though the situation is precarious. Israel’s actions – military and economic – in response to the situation sometimes appears to be erratic. We tend to respond to the number of attacks and the severity of the damage inflicted rather than articulate a clear policy. We long for peace and quiet but can’t seem to achieve it. Many Israelis have been interviewed in the media over the past week or so. There are as many opinions and facets of opinion as there are interviewees. Many Palestinians have also been interviewed on Israel radio lately. We have yet to hear any spectrum of responses. We, Israel, are always at fault. Not one of the Palestinians interviewed has even grudgingly admitted that perhaps firing hundreds of rockets at Israel is a cause of the Israeli response. We haven’t heard a single Palestinian voice calling for an end to the rocket attacks. The culprit is always Israel, the occupation, the roadblocks, the aerial attacks. Not a single voice admits, even grudgingly that after Israel’s complete withdrawal from the Gaza strip the Palestinians perhaps missed a chance to work for their own security and wellbeing and development of housing, schools, and economic development rather than waging a war against Israel. So we are not overly optimistic that a breakthrough is on the horizon. We do not share President Bush’s optimism that a document will be signed while he is in office. However, we do hope that the coming months will bring a significant reduction in the hostilities. This is our ‘take’ on the current situation. As we see it, our Palestinian neighbors have declared war on us and there is no reason for us to fight with one hand tied behind our backs. On that note, we are off to celebrate T”U b’Shvat with a moshav T”U b’Shvat seder, and would like to wish you a happy T”U b’Shvat. We appreciate your support, messages and phone calls. We thank you for your prayers and good wishes. We appreciate your orders of Roses from Israel and hope they bring color and beauty to your homes.
It seems that most of the time I begin by apologizing for not writing for so long. I think that truly dedicated bloggers keep at it a bit more than I do.

Our Story

Our Story: M&M Roses Introduces ROSES FROM ISRAEL.

We are M&M ROSES

M & M Roses are Miriam and Myron, producers of cut roses for export to the United States, Europe, and for local sale in Israel. M&M Roses have been growing roses in Moshav Sde Nitzan for over 30 years. MnM

We are located in the Northern Negev of Israel, an area blessed with abundant sunshine which is perfect for rose production. We produce in over 2 hectares (5 acres) of modern greenhouses. Our newest greenhouses have completely computerized climate control, carbon dioxide enrichment, winter heating, summer cooling (pad and fan), and computer control of irrigation and fertilization. All of this adds up to a first class product, picked daily, “quick cooled”, and rushed to the major flower markets in Europe and the USA online lenders.

We are a family owned and managed business and have been growing roses for over 30 years. Our personal attention to each and every stage of growth and harvest assure your complete satisfaction.

We have been shipping roses direct to customers in the United States for over 9 years. The response has been extremely gratifying. We have supplied weddings, birthdays, bar/bat mitzvahs, anniverseries, and other family occasions as well as fundraising projects in synagogues, day schools, Hadassah groups, JCC’s and other community events in every one of the 50 United States.

WE ARE GREEN ! WE CARE ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT

We are concerned with the environment and the impact of horticulture on our air, land and water. Therefore we:

Have reduced our carbon footprint by curtailing our use of fossile fuels by hundreds of tons yearly.
Have reduced our carbon footprint by curtailing our use of electricity by thousands of KWh yearly.
Irrigate most of our greenhouses with recycled and purified waste water piped from the Tel Aviv area to the Negev. Use of this recycled water keeps millions of gallons of waste water from our streams and the Mediterranean Sea.
Grow on articial media (volcanic rock) which allows us to recycle our own drain water to prevent waste and reduce pollution.
Carefully monitor pest and insect problems to minimize use of pesticides.
Seperate all of of our agricultural waste to allow recycling.
All of the plastic waste from Sde Nitzan is recycled.
There are plans to use our organic waste for compost.

THE STORY OF M&M ROSES:

M & M ROSES have been growing roses in the Negev desert of Israel for over 30 Years. Moshav Sde Nitzan was established 35 years ago in the southwest corner of Israel, near the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian border. It was originally established to attract English speaking immigrants to settle the Negev. Among those were Myron, a plant pathologist, who came to Israel from Chicago in the 60’s, and Miriam, with a degree in sociology and psychology, who hails from Melbourne, Australia.

The inspiration for the moshav came from Eddie Peretz, the grand nephew of the Yiddish author, Y.L. Peretz. After the Six Day War Peretz discovered his dormant Jewish identity and decided to do what he could for Israel. He had been growing tomatoes all his adult life and came to the Jewish Agency and Ministry of Agriculture with his idea. His dream was to grow tomatoes for export to England. The Jewish Agency had a dream of attracting educated western immigrants to settle in the Negev utilizing limited land and water resources while exploiting the natural climatic advantages of the Negev. These two dreams meshed into what became Moshav Sde Nitzan. SDE

Originally, 27 English speaking families (from America, Canada, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia) settled on a barren site in the Negev. Most of these families came to Sde Nitzan to fulfill their Zionist dreams and participate in a new and unique settlement experience. With the support of the Jewish Agency, greenhouses were imported from Holland and the greenhouse industry in Israel was given a major push forward. The population of the moshav has grown from 27 to 74 families. However, the position of agriculture in Israel, and in the moshav, has steadily declined over the years, leading to economic hardships. Many of the original members have left the moshav. Others have abandoned agriculture as a significant source of their livelihood. Flower growing has replaced the tomato industry.

Most of the new members knew nothing about agriculture, but they each had at least one university degree. Some held PhD’s in physics, English literature, or political science. There were pharmacists, accountants, speech therapists, and a lawyer or two. Many of the original “Anglo – Saxon” settlers gave up after a few years. Some left the moshav and settled elsewhere in Israel, and some returned to their countries of origin. Of the 74 families now living in Sde Nitzan, there are 13 of the original “Anglo-Saxon” pioneer families still living on the moshav.

About 10 years ago, severe competition from African and South American flower growers resulted in a long period of shrinking profits for Israeli flower growers. Myron and Miriam’s use of internet based marketing to increase profits was one of their innovative ways of surviving in a difficult business.

Myron and Miriam have been growing roses and exporting them to Holland for over 30 years. The roses are sold at the famous Dutch flower auctions. About nine years ago they began to deliver fresh cut roses, directly from their greenhouses in the Negev, to any address in the USA. At the present time, this unique door to door service is available in the United States only.

Greenhouse

The roses are picked and packed in Moshav Sde Nitzan, then shipped to New York by Agrexco, the Israel Agricultural Export Co. The flowers are then delivered by FedEx directly to the customer’s door. The roses arrive in excellent condition and have been used by synagogues, churches, schools and organisations, for community functions and fund raising activities, as well as use by private individuals, all over the United States . Identification with Israel and pride in using “blue and white” products at individual and community functions has been a significant motive for people ordering flowers from Israel. In these days of strife there are great numbers of people, who are seeking a way to support Israeli businesses and identify with Israel. Purchasing “Roses from Israel” is a beautiful way to do this.

Surprisingly, it is no more expensive to order roses in this way. In fact these imported roses from Israel are less expensive than roses bought “on other websites” and often cost less than locally bought roses, due to the fact that Myron and Miriam have cut out the assistance, and cost, of any middlemen.

Even though the roses can only be delivered to the United States, anyone, anywhere in the world, can order these Roses from Israel, to be sent to friends or relatives in the States
Numerous groups, synagogues, Jewish Day Schools, JCC’s, USY groups, Chabad, Na’amat, Hadassah, and others have ordered “Roses From Israel” for distribution and also for fundraising.

Our roses are grown in Israel, irrigated with water from the Sea of Galilee and kissed by the sun which shines on Jerusalem, the capital of Israel. These roses are not just flowers, they are a message of solidarity and identification with Israel.

You can have your High Holiday table or services, Pesach Seder, wedding, confirmation, Bar or Bat mitzvah, birthday, office party or any occasion enhanced and beautified by our magnificent Roses from Israel. Use these Roses to decorate your home or synagogue for any occasion. ROSES FROM ISRAEL are available only from us, directly from our greenhouses to your door. Make your function an unforgettable one. Welcome To M&M Roses at IsraelRose.com

Shalom dear friends and valued customers. Myron and I have been “M&M Roses” for over 10 years. Many of you have been our customers for nearly as long and we feel that you are truly valued friends. Just as the roses are part of our lives, you too have become part of our lives. After growing roses in Israel for about 25 years, 10 years ago we took on a nearly impossible mission and decided to branch out and send the roses we grow, here in the Negev, to homes and communities across the USA. We are the only growers here in Israel to do that. We hope that we have succeeded in bringing the beauty of Israel into your homes. For a number of reasons, our business never quite achieved the volume of sales necessary to make it a viable enterprise. Although we were always flooded with orders for the major holidays, we had great hopes that more and more people would want our roses during the rest of the year; but this did not happen. A variety of circumstances have, in the final analysis forced us to decide to close our greenhouses and cease growing roses. With that decision, of course, comes the inevitable closure of M&M Roses. We will close our greenhouses at the end of April this year.As we feel there is no chance of reestablishing the business in the near future we must say Shalom, Todah and L’hitraot. Our toll free number will be discontinued at the end of April. You can always reach us by email. We will be happy to keep in touch with you. We thank you again for your support and continued interest in both us and in our business. We wish you Peace, health and happiness.Miriam and Myron
